Review of "Sorcerer Hunters" In February 1999, ADV released volume one of "Sorcerer Hunters". Known as "Bakeretsu (explosive) Hunters" in Japan, the TV series was well known for its action, humor, and beautiful women. "Sorcerer Hunters" takes place in a mystical world on the Spooner Continent. There, a handful of magic users (AKA sorcerers) hold domain over the common folk. The Sorcerer Hunters are a group of warriors, who are dispatched by Demi-Goddess Big Mama, to deal with the Sorcerers who abuse their powers. Each one of the "Hunters" has his or her own special ability. Also, in the tradition of other anime shows, pretty much all of the characters are named after desserts or snacks. First off, is the leader of the group Carrot Glace, Carrot is an incredible pervert and is infamous for chasing around young women while screaming "Date-o! Date-o! Date-o!" (Let's date! Lets Date! Let's date!). Even though he may not look it, Carrots power is the most dangerous, when hit by magic, Carrot becomes a gigantic minotar-like creature. The other Glace in the group is Carrots younger brother Marron (chestnuts). Quite, reserved, and polite, Marron is the exact opposite of Carrot. Marron is an expert in eastern magic and is highly protective of his older brother. Through out the coarse of the series, Carrot is chased around by the only two girls who would ever want him, Chocolate and Tira Misu. (tiramisu which is a very creamy Italian cake). Chocolate is bold and outgoing towards Carrot, wile Tira, is shy and quiet. Both the sisters have transformations were they become two very mature and very dangerous women. Chocolate sports a "French biker chick" look and a very sharp garrote. Tira takes on an orange and white leotard with a bullwhip and a maniacal laugh. The only member of the group who's not accompanied by a sibling is Gateau (cake) Mocha. Gateau's the strong man of the team, as well as somewhat of an egotist, (he enjoys showing of his spectacular build). He has incredible strength, and has been shown to punch through walls, (and sorcerers). He's also rummored to have a thing with Marron (^_^) The series has a witty story line and a great sense of humor. The subtitled version of the series includes Megumi Hayashibara (Lina in Slayers, Lime in Saber Marionette J, Rei in Evangealion, etc.) as Tira. One the best things about "Sorcerer Hunters" is how good the dub is. To be perfectly honest, I'm more of a subtitle fan, but this dub is very good. Bret Weaver (a renowned ADV actor,) does the voice of Carrot with quite an amount of energy, (He tends to have Carrot run around wile franticly screaming "Princess!Princess!Princess!"). It's one of those dubs that you can watch with out feeling guilty. "Sorcerer Hunters" has a great opening theme "What's up guys" and an incredible ending theme "Mask" (It's hard to find good ending themes). Be warned though, "Sorcerer Hunters" does have some mature themes and language, but nothing above a TVPG ratting. The series has decent animation, as well as some great character designs. All and all a great series; and to quote a web sight I once saw "More fun than a romp through the loony bin." Though probably most of the group would fit right in.
